When you try to open Outlook, it hangs for a bit and then displays an error ‘Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook Window. The set of folders cannot be opened. The file C:\Users\Your profile\Documents\Outlook Files\file.pst cannot be opened’.
If you’ve encountered such a situation, you’re not alone. It is a common issue faced by many Outlook users. The reasons for this error can vary but some of the common ones are running Outlook in compatibility mode or corruption in the Outlook data file (PST).
Whatever the reason, the consequences are the same; your Outlook will not work properly. Here in this article, we provide some effective solutions to resolve the issue.
Solution 1: Recover Navigation Pane configuration file
Sometimes corrupted navigation pane settings may prevent Outlook from starting normally. To reset this, follow the steps below.
- Press Windows + R to open Run
- Then type exe /resetnavpane and click Ok
This command removes personalization’s to the navigation pane and this may help you restart Outlook normally.
Solution 2: Disable Compatibility mode in Outlook
Compatibility mode is designed to help run a program in older OS versions. Having this turned on may cause issues with the normal functioning of Outlook. Try turning it off (if enabled) and open Outlook to see if the issue is resolved.
- Click on Start > Search
- In the Search bar, type exe
- Right click on it and select the Open file location
- Once you are in the file location, once again, right click on Outlook.exe and select Properties
- In the Compatibility tab, clear the checkbox ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for’
- Click Ok and restart Outlook
Solution 3: Open Outlook in Safe Mode
Safe mode means Outlook will start without any add-ins. This is the easiest way to determine if add-ins are causing trouble.
- Press Windows + R to open Run
- Type Outlook /safe and click Ok
If Outlook starts normally in Safe Mode, then the problems are with your add-ins. Restart Outlook and disable add-ins one at a time to see which one is causing trouble. To disable add-ins,
- Choose File > Options > Add-ins
- Select COM add-ins and Go
- Clear all checkboxes and select them one at a time, each time restarting Outlook. Identify the add-in causing trouble.
Solution 4: Repair PST file
If none of the above solutions work, your Outlook data file may be corrupt. To repair this, you can use the built-in functionality called Scanpst.
- Press Windows + X and click on File Explorer
- In the Search bar, type exe
- Double click on the file and choose your PST file
Note: For Outlook versions 2010, 2013 and 2016, you can find the PST file in Documents\Outlook\Files folder. However, if you don’t it here, it could be hidden. To find this file, go to C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook
- Click Start to repair your PST file.
Scanpst repairs minor corruptions of your PST file. One disadvantage of using this tool is that it is a lengthy process and may have to be run several times before the issue is fixed.
To overcome this issue and for a more reliable approach, you can make use of specialized tools available for PST repair. Hi5 Software provides a tool to fix corrupt Outlook PST files.
