Many users complain that their systems are not working as expected after Windows updates? Before we conclude that the reason for trouble is the update itself, it is important to understand that there could be other reasons like new software installed on your computer, a new hardware or a driver update. And the update may be just a coincidence.
In order to troubleshoot issues that your system is experiencing post a Windows update, let us look at some troubleshooting steps in this article.
- Restart your computer
This may not really sound like a troubleshooting step, but restarting systems has been found to resolve many kinds of problems. So, if you are someone experiencing issues after updating Windows, try restarting your computer. If it helps, great! If not, please proceed to the next step.
- Update drivers
If you are experiencing issues with audio or any hardware device after a Windows 10 update, try updating your drivers using the following steps.
- Click on Windows + X keys and select Device Manager
- In the Device Manager, click on the ‘+’ sign to locate your device
- Once you have found the device for which you want to update drivers for, right click on it and select Update Driver
- You can either select Update drivers automatically or you can do it manually if drivers are available on your computer
- Perform a system restore
A system restore restores your PC to an earlier point that you select. That means any changes after a particular point will be undone. In this case, your Windows update will be undone provided you select an appropriate restore point. To do this, follow the steps below.
- Click on Windows + X keys and select Control Panel
- In the Control Panel, select System and Security
- Click System > System protection link > System Restore
- Select a restore point from the list. Here make sure to select a point just before the Windows update
- Run System File Checker
System File Checker or SFC is a scan performed to check for corruption in system files and repair them. To run this scan, follow the steps below.
- Once again, click Windows + X keys and select Command Prompt
- In the Command Prompt, type ‘sfc /scannow’
Wait until the scan completes and issues are fixed. Now check if the problem you are experiencing is resolved.
- Reset this PC
If the above solutions don’t help you resolve the issue, you may have to perform a factory reset to help solve the problem.
- Click on the Start button and select Settings
- Click Update & Security > Recovery > Advanced Startup
- Click Restart Now and wait for the computer to restart and display Advanced Startup options
- In the Advanced Startup options menu, select Troubleshoot > Reset This PC
- Next, you will be asked if you want to keep your files or to remove everything. Select an appropriate option and proceed
Once the factory reset is complete, your problem should be sorted and you should be all set to use your system without any issues.
Please note that if you selected ‘Remove everything’, all your files will be deleted and your computer will be restored to a state it was when it left the factory. If at any point, you need some files that were deleted after a factory reset, you can use data recovery tools like Hi5 Software to do the work for you. It is a great choice to recover files after a factory reset. All your data will be recovered in the same manner as it was originally.

What if Windows does not start after an update?
