- Check the desktop folders
- Open ‘C:\Users\your user account\’ You might see two desktop folders, one with your desktop items and another blank.
- Delete the blank one
- Copy the desktop folder with desktop items from ‘C:\Users\your user account\’ folder to ‘C:\Windows\System32\config\systemprofile\’
- Restart your computer
If the issue still persists, proceed to the next step.
- Create a new user account
Create a new user account and try. If the issue still persists, you can fix the corrupt profile by following the steps below.
- Press Windows + X and select File Explorer
- Click on View tab and click on Options at the top right corner
- Click on View tab and then click on Show hidden files, folders and drives
- Uncheck Hide protected operating system files
- Confirm your choice and then click Ok
- Locate C:\Users\Old_Username folder, where Old Username is the name of the profile you want to copy files from.
- Select all of the files and folders in this folder, except the following
.Ntuser.dat, Ntuser.dat.log & .Ntuser.ini
- Right click on them and select Copy
- Locate C:\Users\New_username folder where New-Username is the name of the new user profile you created
- Right click inside the folder and select Paste
- Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. If the issue still persists, proceed to the next step.
- Restore your PC to an earlier point in time
You may receive this error if there are changes made to your PC. Thus, restoring your PC to an earlier point in time may help resolve the issue.
- Click on Windows + X to open the power users menu
- Select Control Panel
- Enter Recovery in the Control Panel search box and click on Recovery
- Then click on System Restore and follow the instructions in the wizard
- Recover data
